DINNER DANCE IN THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF

CLUB ROTARIO BAHIA DE JALTEMBA SOLD OUT DINNER DANCE

The theme to the Jaltemba Bay La Penita Rotary Club’s sold-out third annual fundraiser dinner dance was the Rotary motto, Service Above Self. Money raised from the dinner dance will help fund our club’s commitment to the building of kindergartens; to the remodeling of school classrooms; to the funding of educational and health programs; to the La Penita recycling program and to the Learning For Life leadership program.  Our club believes that with the help of other organizations, who are also committed to service above self, our efforts will attain even greater results. During the evenings festivities, individuals from four organizations were recognized for their community and humanitarian service.  They were Jim Williams and Esteban Valdivia from Margarita Challenge; Lin Chimes from JBAR; Maruca Dinsmore and Judy Krainc from Cancer de Mama and Carlos Flores from Los Amigos.  Folkorico dancing and music by Manuel and His Friends rounded out the Rotary fellowship evening.  Thanks to all for your generous support.

Leadership Training – Become a Mentor and Change a Life

A community without leaders will not be successful, in the present nor in the future.  It will always be a victim to those who will lead from outside, private interests directed for the good of the few, at the expense of the security for all.

Jaltemba Bay La Penita Rotary has partnered with Chacala Cambiando Vidas, La Penita Los Amigos and Kalispell Montana Rotary in the implementation of a Rotary International grant called, Learning for Life.

Eighty high school scholarship students, along with their supportive mentors, will participate in an all day leadership event at Marina Chacala’s Beach Club facility on December 4th.  Some of the great names in leadership training will be there:  Debbie Walton, Eddie Dominquez and Stephanie Arnest, instructing the second in a three phase course.

Some of the focus will be on:  self leadership, team work and the empowerment of learning.

Be a part of this day.  Mentors, both nationals and foreigners, are needed.  It is a fact, the enrichment of the ideas put forward in the leadership training that will be a guiding light  for all those that participate.  Please contact Susana at susanaescobido@gmail.com for information.

Little Children are Just Kids Needing a School

Kinder, as it is called, is not compulsory in Mexico.

No one can dispute however the scientific fact, the cognitive mind is operating at it peak only for the formative years of one to nine.  If there is no channeling of information into these eager brains, everyone loses: the child, the community, the world.

Two years ago, Jaltemba Bay La Peñita Rotary Club identified areas in and around La Peñita that either had kinders with a minimum of facilities or just a hut at best.

Even though the Rotary club is small and new, it has heart, vision, organizational skills and knows persons in very important places.  It has been able to rally local Mexican and foreigner support, coming together to create safe classrooms/schools that we are all proud of.

  • Some of the projects have needed land, donated by the local Ejido mesa.
  • Some projects have needed basic sanitation like:  bathrooms, sewer connectivity or septic systems.
  • Some projects needed a total building, while others needed a fence to keep cows out of the classroom.

Parents and volunteers share the cost of the projects, giving and working side by side. The projects are small, ideal for helping hands, a work party for a couple of hours, some money donated that goes a long way.  If after you have worked with parents and others and you have been invited to the opening day ceremony, do not be surprise if you shed a tear or two and be prepared to have darling little children and their parents give you a big hug, straight from the heart!

There are still “work in progress” schools.  Come lend a hand, bring your friends and guests.  If we all help but one child, would the planet be a more sustainable place.  For more information, please contact Susana at the Jaltemba Bay La Peñita Rotary Clubsusanaescobido@gmail.com.

Jaltemba Bay Rotary Club News for November 2011

YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK!
Municipal commissioners Rosa Guillermina and Romy Mora were the presenters at the Wednesday morning Jaltemba Bay La Penita Rotary club meeting.  Dr. Pimienta is making good on his promise to place a greater emphasis on health.  Please come and join workers and volunteers on December 3rd and 4th, as they participate in a huge clean up campaign.  The designated areas are from Los Ayala to La Penita.  The clean-up will focus on the bay, the beaches and the highway.  Divers will work the depths of the bay, while others will clean the beaches while others will concentrate on the highway.  Come be a part of making YOUR WORLD a better place.  For more information contact English speaking, Romy, at: romy_mora@hotmail.com or call Romy at 322-158-2919.  Rosa’s email is lic_rgdj@hotmail.com or phone her at: 311-122-8474.

MAKING THE TIANGIS A CLEANER AND A MORE PLEASING EXPERIENCE
Municipal commissioners, Romy Mora and Rosa Guillermina, are actively getting the word out about the improvement of the popular tiangis open market.  One of their stops has been the Jaltemba Bay La Penita Rotary Club’s Wednesday morning meetings.  They explained to the local Rotary club that a nearby area, originally designed for parking, has evolved into a squatter’s slum, without the proper health structures.  The squatters will be moved to another area which will then make the market a safer, cleaner and more enjoyable experience.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT
We have a new municipal administration.  They will have an office in your area, how convenient for all!  That is the good news.  The not so good news, they lack basic office equipment (desks, chairs, file cabinets, supplies, etc).  Do not ask “why”.  It is what it is.  The municipal government is combining offices with the federal DIF organization, both to the betterment of our local area.  All of us have an extra table,a chair, or office something to donate.  Please contact Romy Mora.  She speaks perfect English. Romy, at: romy_mora@hotmail.com or call Romy at 322-158-2919.  Rosa’s email is lic_rgdj@hotmail.com or phone her at: 311-122-8474.

Kalyan Banerjee

RI President’s Message
Dear brothers and sisters in Rotary:

For 2011-2012 Rotary dresses in green, the color of the leaves of trees, spring and renewal of life. Now is the time for Rotary “turns green,” leaving behind the usual pale gray.

Rotary only 11% of our members are under 40 years of age, while 68% are over 50 and 39% are over 60. It is easy to predict what will happen in 10, 20 or 30 years unless we take decisive action. Is not enough with the affiliation of new members. To revitalize our beloved organization need younger members.

But how do we attract younger members, so different from young professionals to make one or two generations? You have to look where they are, and most are on the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, email and smartphones. A club without a web presence for them there. The club website is your public image, and it has to be attractive.

More than anything, is to re-emphasize the family of Rotary. Rotary should be a big family consisting of Rotarians and family, and the Rotaract, Interact, Youth Exchange students, alumni Foundation and other relatives. So when we talk about conservation, as well as Rotarians we have to include the entire family of Rotary.

Often we went looking for partners outside of our circle and we put aside our own young generation that awaits our call. We find among these young people to the capable and enthusiastic new members who will become club presidents, district governors and key leaders of tomorrow RI.

We must ensure that our generation of Rotarians is not the last. We owe this great Rotary family of all time. Let us look within ourselves to embrace the great family of Rotary, and also embrace all humanity.

Adamson (EE.UU.); Lars-Olof Fredriksson (Finlandia); Serge Gouteyron, (Francia); Jerry L. Hall (EE.UU.); Rafael G. Hechanova (Filipinas) Toshio Itabashi (Japón); Michael J. Johns (EE.UU.); Kwang Tae Kim (Corea); David D. Morgan (Gales); Hans J. Müller-Rech (Alemania); M.K. Panduranga Setty ( India); Julio Sorjús (España); Carlos E. Speroni, (Argentina); Robert A. Stuart Jr. (EE.UU.); Yoshimasa Watanabe (Japón) y C. Grant Wilkins, (EE.UU.).

Burton is choice for 2013-14 RI president

Ron D. Burton, a member of the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2013-14. Burton will become the president-nominee on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates.

Burton retired as president of the University of Oklahoma Foundation Inc. in 2007. He is a member of the American Bar Association, as well as the bar associations of Cleveland County and the state of Oklahoma. He is admitted to practice in Oklahoma and before the U.S. Supreme Court.

“This is an exciting time to be a Rotarian,” Burton says. “I believe we are well poised to capitalize on our strengths as we embrace the [RI] Strategic Plan and the Future Vision Plan. My vision is to have every Rotarian appreciate what it means to be a Rotarian. With these two tools, we can make that happen.”

Active in his community, Burton is a founder and past president of the Norman Public School Foundation, and founder and past board member of the Norman Community Foundation. A recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, he is a past vice president of the Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Burton believes that Rotary’s promotion of high ethical standards is one of the qualities that sets it apart from other organizations.

“It assures those dealing with us that we can be trusted,” he says. “Most of us are in a business or profession that already has a code of ethics. Vocational service in Rotary just adds to that responsibility. We have an obligation to go above and beyond to make sure that all our actions are above reproach.”

A Rotarian since 1979, Burton is vice chair of the Future Vision Committee and a member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force for the United States. He has served RI as director; Rotary Foundation trustee and trustee vice chair; International Assembly moderator, assistant moderator, and group discussion leader; and district governor.

His other service to Rotary includes chair of the 2011 New Orleans Convention Committee, vice chair of the Investment Advisory Committee, liaison trustee of the Vocational Service Committee, Permanent Fund national adviser, and regional Rotary Foundation coordinator. He was aide to 2006-07 RI President William B. Boyd.

Burton has received the RI Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, Distinguished Service Award, and International Service Award for a Polio-Free World.

Burton and his wife, Jetta, have two children and three grandchildren.

The 2011 nominating committee members are John M. Pinson, USA (chair); Eric E.L. Adamson, USA; Lars-Olof Fredriksson, Finland; Serge Gouteyron, France; Jerry L. Hall, USA; Rafael G. Hechanova, Philippines; Toshio Itabashi, Japan; Michael J. Johns, USA; Kwang Tae Kim, Korea; David D. Morgan, Wales; Hans J. Müller-Rech, Germany; M.K. Mensaje del Presidente de RI / Message of the RI President

Presidente de Rotary Internacional,
Kalyan Banerjee

Bill Boyd
Presidente del Consejo de Fiduciarios
La Fundación Rotaria, 2011-2012

Dear brothers and sisters in Rotary:
RI President Kalyan Banerjee

An old Indian proverb says that if we help a neighbor’s boat to cross the river, we see that we also reached the other shore. Thus, helping others, we often help ourselves as well. We all Rotarians to serve and then discover the satisfaction that offer friendship and companionship. In August, the month dedicated to the development of membership, we must focus our efforts to spread the message of Rotary. To serve without hiding our Rotarians as we approach our goal: to be a stronger and more dynamic for future generations.
The public image and increase in membership go hand in hand. Too many intelligent people with a strong background not know what Rotary. On many occasions we have heard from communities where, despite the great work of Rotary clubs, many people do not even know the existence of such clubs. Follow this road is not an acceptable alternative to our organization.
Serving is the first step, but it is only the beginning. We must raise our profile using all means at our disposal. We should use social networks like Twitter or Facebook and we need to ensure that clubs have a presence on the Internet. However, having a website is not enough, it must be updated, be attractive, reflect the work of the club and above all provide the ability for prospective members to show their interest in the organization once they have had the opportunity met.
Rotary has a lot to offer. Inform others about the wonderful thing about our organization and show how they can integrate it into their lives is our duty. The service takes time and today no one has enough. Therefore we must make sure not to waste that we dedicate to Rotary. When you look within ourselves and our clubs, when we understand all that we can do and take advantage of this energy, we will raise our communities as never before and as a result raised to Rotary.

Kalyan Banerjee

Message from the President of LFR, Bill Boyd
The Rotary Foundation and the service

In recent months, Lorna and I went to three district conferences. The programs of these events included various activities of the Foundation and had the opportunity to meet Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotary World Peace Scholars, GSE teams and representatives of magnificent projects that Rotarians work together shoulder to shoulder with the Foundation. Through these activities I could appreciate the high level of overlap of our Rotary Foundation Rotary service.

After the conference, I attended the meeting of the Future Vision Committee, during which one of the CEOs of RI, who had tested the system global grant application, said it seemed too complicated. Also discussed the definition of basic education within the areas of interest, possible strategic alliances and training for non-pilot districts.

Many other topics were discussed, but I mention these to emphasize that during the pilot must pay attention to many issues. We all face difficulties in the process we will build the foundation of tomorrow and many of you three years of the pilot phase will seem endless. However, this transformation will allow us to more effectively serve humanity in the future and we need to make sure to follow the right path.

Immediately after the meeting attended by the Finance Committee and in the course of this, trustees and senior management spent a day and a half completing the budget in order to minimize operating costs while maintaining quality of service offered. Our intention is to devote as much funding to programs.

This is our foundation, and as they are numerous people working on it with the goal of facilitating the most of your Rotary service.
